Szczuczy Canal
Attraction description
The Szczuczy Canal is an artificial bay about 500 meters long, connecting Lake Bukowo with the Baltic Sea. It was created in 1925 to regulate the water level in the lake to prevent flooding of the surrounding towns, and also served shipping and fishing purposes.
The channel is located halfway along the Bukowo Spit, near the village of Dąbkowice. Access to it is via the internal road of the Maritime Office in Słupsk, starting in Dąbki near the Sailing Marina. Due to nature protection and the presence of rare species of reptiles and amphibians, car traffic is limited there, and moving vehicles requires a special permit. Alternatively, the route can be covered by bike or on foot, which allows you to enjoy the picturesque views of the forest covered by the Natura 2000 program.
A walk along the Szczuczy Channel leads to the place where the fresh waters of Lake Bukowo meet the salty waters of the Baltic Sea. The path along the canal is wild and natural, making it a peaceful and contemplative walk away from the crowds of tourists. It is an ideal place for nature lovers, anglers and those seeking peace and quiet and contact with nature.
There are also historical remains in the area around the canal, such as old palisades of breakwaters that once supported the marinas and jetties, as well as a building on the dunes that housed a dismantled radar tower from World War II.
The canal and its surroundings are a place where you can feel close to nature, relax from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and discover lesser-known corners of the Polish coast.
